Fellow 9ruler Volkher sent me a little heads up this morning that this site looks shockingly similar to mine. Indeed it does – it seems I’ve been ripped!

Surprisingly enough, I wasn’t the least bit angry. I thought for sure if this ever happened, I would be irate. Especially in a case as blatantly obvious as this one. But I wasn’t at all. I was actually laughing as I viewed the source and CSS to find out he hadn’t even bothered to change selector names and all of my comments are still in place. I mean, you know you’re a jerk when you rip someone this bad, but you’re a real lazy jerk when you can’t be bothered to change it up under the hood. The hover link classes are even the same for the main content areas.

The one thing that has got me a little upset though, is that this rip has been featured over at CSS Mania. Now that just sucks. Hopefully this dude has a little decency and will email them to let them know he’s not worthy of being featured. But honestly, I don’t see that happening.

my site vs pensando design

What is they say? Imatation is the highest form of flattery?

Cliche?

Well yeah, but it does hold up.

Though maybe it should be updated. How about:

Rippin’ is da wackest bomb…

or what ever those ‘crazy kids’ say these days.

They say that impersonation is the sincerest form of flattery. This is rather funny, he’s even used te same colour underlines as you do, even though it doesn’t fit his colour scheme at all.

What a laugh.

Are you planning on taking up action?

I’ll be honest; I like your layout so much I’m stealing it for a new design I’m doing (actually, just the black top half, not the lower gray stuff). HOWEVER… I’m actually using this redesign to learn CSS and do the design from scratch. I’ve always been a tables guy, but it’s time I catch up with some standards.

That being said, someone using WebCopier on your site for their own site? That’s low. However, just like Dave said; imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

His website title is "Pensando Design" that means "Thinking Design" in portuguese! He is a "professional interface designer". LOL!

It’s interesting because this rip is somewhat well done considering the poor quality of most rips. I really feel like he’s made some effort from a design perspective to make it "his design" but using your specific layout. But you can definitely see where he hasn’t paid attention to the finer details which is where your design certainly excels. Like the flickr area. Since he’s removed the word flickr, it no longer lines up with the content below it.

Just be happy someone feels your design is that good to rip. 🙂

I actually found the site through CSS Mania. That’s what bothers me about the whole thing: CSS "showcases" including everything and anything thrown their way … without second thought.

And the rip itself … amateurish.

We would go about it a lot more professionally. 😉

Well, within the last half hour it’s already changed back to the previous design. Obviously he knew he was doing something wrong to change it so quickly.

I noticed in the source code he even kept the 9rules logo image. Apparently he thinks commenting it out makes it all better.

It is quite funny though. Glad you took it well though, not too many people do.

i saw this to day, was going to drop you a mail, well i guess that means your site realy does rock, if someone has ripped it off! take it as a cpmpliment!!

I can handle someone liking my layout and deciding to build a site of the same structure. Totally fine with that. But jacking the html and css and merely plopping your own design on top, I’m not ok with.

I heard from him within a couple hours of posting this…

Hi Matt,

I’m really sorry and I’ll talk to my developer about that.

Meanwhile, I’ve moved back to my old website.

Again, my apologies!

regards.

I’ve had a lot of inquiries about releasing my site as a theme. I’ve given it a lot of thought and was planning to release it for Christmas, but couldn’t pull it off. It’s going to be tricky since I use so many damn plugins, but I still plan on doing it. I’ll take this as further proof that people really do want it. Hah!

@Mike Stickel: The commented out 9rules image was hilarious!

Hey Matt, So sad to see the site was a total rip.

Useing a site as inspiration is one thing, however useing all the code and images goes way to far.

You stated "

I’ve had a lot of inquiries about releasing my site as a theme".

If for some reason you do, please let me know, I would love to attempt to port the layout to e107.

Cheers Mate.

Love your works

I remember my first rip. I was actually kinda honored, that someone thought my work to be worthy of a rip. But, that quickly turns sour after it happens time and time again. Seems he’s changed his layout.

He’s probably as talented as I am with design. He just beat me to ripping your site and calling it my own. =)

I would have probably gone through some phases:

– Pissed someone ripped my work.

– Happy that someone thought enough to rip my work.

– Concerned that someone thought my work was someone elses.

– Pissed that someone ripped my work.

Not that I have to worry about any of this. I can’t code worth dang.

It just shows you that you have a brilliant design here… i agree with Anthony : you should take it as a compliment 🙂

Do you know what really gets my goat in these situations?

They never have the balls to say okay I ripped you off, sorry I will take it down. They always say "I will speak to my development team / developer… " or "wasn’t me / I was unaware…"

It was a personal site for a developer for crying out loud… or thats what it looks like to me.

Anyway that said, it is a compliment to have happened in the first place… Does this mean you will redesign if you release this as a theme?

I must say your design is extremely compelling. Seeing how long it takes me to come up with a crappy design, I must say it is frustratting to realize I’ll never even come close…

BTW thanks for feedicon.com (another slick design), I just subscribed to the newsletter. Pretty cool.

You should feel flattered to have your website design ripped. That obviously the webmaster in question likes it enough to use it as his own work.

If somebody is ripping your site, I would say its really a compliment for the original-site owner but just only so long as you can handle the situation/contact with the ripper.

But this "milestone" showed absolutely that your site is awesome 😉

Greetz

Matt, even if you realease your theme it can still be somewhat ripped. It takes two seconds to remove the copyright, and weeks trying to get it put back on. It’s really annoying, and I would know as I’ve realeased my theme.. I’ve had about 20% of the installes of my theme remove the copyright. Idiots.

I’d love to see your theme out though, It might be fun to change it up a bit for fun 😛

Hi Matt,

I get angry :@ happened to me about 7 times since october and i’ve blogged about it about 3 times. I’ve grown to almost ignore it now.

I knew about that Matt. And from my point of view, your site has been used as inspiration without mentioning the "original" design, which is yours.

Actually, i totally agree with Jonathan about : "I really feel like he’s made some effort from a design perspective to make it “his designâ€? but using your specific layout".

From my point of view, it should not be considered as a rip off. Thats my honest idea. Lets say that your "layout" has been ripped, not the rest.

Me at CSS-Mania , dont support this kind of ripping, but i do not consider it should be removed from CSS-Mania. Enough that the link is not working anymore.

What program doyou use to take screen shots, like the full website, I’ve been wanting to do that forever, for portfolios and stuff, when I show off my design.

@Duncan: I use Snagit for screenshots. There’s lots of apps that’ll do it, but I like how simple it is to setup different shortcuts with Snagit. I have Ctrl+Shift+w setup to take a screenshot of a window and automatically scrolls it from top to bottom, then saves the image to file. You can easily capture huge sites like this without having to take multiple screenshots.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

As said before by others, you should be flattered this guy has ripped your design Matt. Actually you inspired me to start my own personal blog. I really love your site design, and I’m really looking forward to your official theme release. BTW. U have a list of the plugins you use?

Damn man! Hehehe, I mean I totally love your site’s layout and look but I wouldn’t try to blatently duplicate it! And yeah, DAMN he is lazy hehe 😉 Kudos to you for having a site so freaking awesome that people want to rip it though I suppose 😛

You can also use Screen Grab for Firefox (extension) it is free 😉 It’s what we use at work all the time (website design house)

Well, it looks like that guy has taken his website down.

Matt, just look at it this way, if some has ripped your design it shows that your good at designing and that’s why people want to copy you, they wish they had the skills you do.

Shivian, I have no idea how to use plug-ins on Firefox, I’ve installed it. But don’t know how to use it.

Edit:

Nevermind I figured it out…Right after I posted that comment. Thanks again. *wink*

I had the same thing happened to my group site a while ago. It’s a headache, but you’re right – it’s also a form of flattery (I suppose).

It’s funny, though, that the people who tend to do also choose to name their site using the "design" suffix.
