Well, Isn’t That Embarrassing

Today’s been a big day, stats wise. Over 300 unique hits and 700+ page views. Stoked! I’m usually in around the 100-150 page views per day range, which is pretty low. But since this is merely something fun for me to do on the side, it doesn’t bother me in the least.

After seeing how many hits I’ve been getting today, I figured I’d click around and take a good look at the site. Yikes! What a mess!

First off, there were countless broken images from February 2005 all the way back to July 2004 when I started posting. I recently moved servers and changed my domain from mb.mediapress.ca to mattbrett.com. It didn’t occur to me that most of the images had an absolute path – since I uploaded them through the WordPress interface – it spits out an absolute path by default. I didn’t notice earlier since Firefox just doesn’t display anything if the image path is incorrect.

The second big one was the lack of navigation on the archive and category pages. I have WP set to display 7 posts per page. Meaning, there was no way to view posts past the most recent 7 per archive/category. I’ve added ‘previous page | next page’ links to the bottom of each page as a temporary fix for this.

There were lots of other stupid mistakes – and still are, all over this site. I guess that’s what happens when you focus all your energy on other people and spend very little time on your own stuff.

I was planning to add some new stuff to this layout – ie. most recent Flickr photos among other things. But there’s already so much wrong with it. I think I’ll just wait until I redesign it. I also kind of butchered the code when I ported it from WP 1.2 to 1.5.

I have however, made some changes around here. Over the past few weeks I’ve enabled Gravatars on comments, added some fancy new Firefox and Thunderbird buttons to the right-column (courtesy of Kamiel Martinet) and switched my feeds over to Feedburner. There’s been lots of talk lately about the feed battle and I figured it was the best way to go based on the opinions I’ve read.

Anyway, I realize there’s a mess to be cleaned and will get to it ASAP!
