When I made the jump back into freelance work in March of this year, I didn’t have much time to get my plan of attack in order. As a matter of fact, I pretty much just started taking on clients again without really giving it a second thought. I had only been out of the game for a year after all. But a lot can happen in a year when you’re talking technology and the internets. When I realized I was a sinking ship, I started to evaluate myself and how I conduct business. That’s when…

This is probably the single most frequently asked question that arrives in my inbox, or elsewhere. And for good reason, I suppose. Seeing how I’ve been building sites on top of WordPress exclusively for about 3 years now. There are many different routes you can take when building a theme, and I’ve pretty much streamlined my method over the past couple years. Granted, there are always exceptions and I’ve found that I can’t work from a base template. Instead, I build “themes” from the ground-up, but with a little help. Here’s how…

Shortly after making my return to freelance web design, a familiar name appeared in my inbox. Not someone I knew personally, but someone I knew of. It seemed Chris Pirillo was in need of a redesign and had been pointed in my direction. When I got talking to Chris about what he was after, I quickly began to get excited, as a redesign was just the tip of the iceberg. Chris had this idea - a social media theme that would allow you to easily integrate the social networks you use on a daily basis into…

…doing freelance web design for a living.
This is definitely not news for those following me on Twitter, as I’ve been dropping hints over the past couple weeks and finally came right out and said it a few nights ago. But for everyone else, I’m pleased to announce that I’ve journeyed back to the land of freelance web design and I have no intentions on leaving.

I’ve seen a ton of chatter over the past few months about Twitter and the majority of it is of the WTF variety. Believe me, I was there too! For the longest time, I really didn’t see the point of getting updates as people go through their daily routines. But after much sitting a-top the fence, I jumped off and am now 484 updates strong. As much as it actually is neat following the lives of those that you may or may not know outside of the interslice, it has other advantages that just sort of… happen.

It’s about how WordPress just fucked me out of a post. I guess the auto-save feature isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I had just finished writing a post about Crackdown and my additiction to agility orbs and clicked the “Save and Continue Editing” button so I could preview my post before publishing. Instead of refreshing the post as it normally does, it took me to a page that asked if I’m sure I want to edit the post - to which I said “yes” while a little confused.

Things have been so hectic lately, and yet I feel like I’m hardly moving in any direction at all. I’ve definitely been feeling like I’m living to work, as apposed to the opposite which I much prefer. It truly is a hard cycle to break - one that I’ve not even begun to figure out. It’s one of those “you know what needs to be done but can’t seem to bring yourself to do it” situations. And all the while I’ve been telling myself that I’m almost there. Just about in the clear when I can have my evenings and weekends back.

When I determined how much content I wanted to deliver up front, I knew it would be a challenge to differentiate each section at first glance and to present it all in a way that wasn’t overwhelming or seem cluttered. This is where the use of colour comes into play. I love pink, and pink and black is the hottest combo ever. So pink represents this guy right here - whether it be the body of a post or a comment I’ve left. Green is “external” or off-site links and blue represents user feedback.
Once I…

Over a week’s passed since the first annual November 1 CSS Reboot. And what a week it’s been! Some how, I ended up on the front page of many design showcase sites that I frequent (list here) - which was awesome to say the least. This brought tons of fresh eyes to my site and in turn, lots of questions in regards to how I have things setup here. I even received a handful of emails asking for my WordPress templates. While I’m not going to hand them over (yet), I will explain how I accomplished…

Today’s been a big day, stats wise. Over 300 unique hits and 700+ page views. Stoked! I’m usually in around the 100-150 page views per day range, which is pretty low. But since this is merely something fun for me to do on the side, it doesn’t bother me in the least.
After seeing how many hits I’ve been getting today, I figured I’d click around and take a good look at the site. Yikes! What a mess!
