Half-Life 2: Episode One 4.5

Half-Life 2 Episode One: Review

The first of 3 new episodes that expand on the Half-Life storyline proves to be well worth the wait and reminds me why I’ve loved Half-Life for so many years.

The Good: More Half-Life! Not only does Episode One expand on the storyline, it comes with a shiny new coat of paint in the form of higher resolution textures and HDR lighting. New enemies and improved AI make this expansion feel anything but the same old.

The Bad: It’s short - about 4-5 hours of gameplay. But with a $20 price tag, you can hardly complain. No new weapons.

It’s been two months, almost to the day, when I kicked the old habit and bought an Xbox 360. Since then, I haven’t spent more than a couple hours total playing games on my PC. I jumped on a couple times and played a couple quick rounds of Battlefront 2 and the odd level from Quake 4. But considering how much time I used to spend PC gaming, that there is pathetic.

  • Over the past few weeks, I’ve read many articles on HDR (High Dynamic Range) and have been pretty excited for the release of Half-Life 2: The Lost Coast - a short tech demo of a segment of the HWY 17 portion of the game which showcases HDR.

So, what is HDR lighting and why should you care? In plain english; HDR lighting adds a level of realism to games that we’re yet to experience. Picture yourself walking through a dark hallway. At the end of the hallway is a window and it’s a beautiful sunny…

There’s A New FPS In Town

I guess we can bid a fond farewell to the Doom engine… and might as well say our goodbyes to Source and maybe even Unreal while we’re at it. 3 dudes working out of an apartment on their own money are working on a game codenamed Project Offset, which is looking pretty incredible at an early stage. They’re developing a next-gen engine that’s going to give all the big boys and run for their money. Project Offset isn’t your typical FPS either. It’s set in a fantasy world comparable to that of which you would…

    Combine Football

I damn near peed my pants today when I came across this forum post among the daily posts on Forever Geek. After reading through the thread, I found out how they were making these hilarious scenes. Some dude named Garry created the ‘Garry Mod‘, which allows you to basically just play around with the coolness of the Half-Life 2 physics engine. I created this funny little scene of 3 combine playing football with a baby[doll]! This is just the beginning! More to come…
