Moving Sucks: T-Minus 11 Days

I’ve been in the same small apartment for a little over 5 years. When I moved out, I was a bachelor with hardly even enough stuff to make the place look occupied. Now I’ve got a wife, daughter, 2 cats, a bunch of fish and more stuff than we know what to do with. I work from home and since there’s no other place for it - my computer setup is in the bedroom. And if you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that I work from home. So yes, I spend the majority of my life in the bedroom. Just about every task I perform (hehe) takes place within a 6 foot radius. Simply put, we’ve out-grown our home.

We couldn’t have been happier the day we found an apartment 2 towns over with an extra bedroom, in suite washer/dryer, central air conditioning and an additional 250 square feet. The beauty of it, aside from all the things I just mentioned, is that it’s only a little more than what we’re paying now. Since we don’t have enough in the old savings account for a down payment on a house yet, we figured we owe it to ourselves to better our home. Being that we’re all home bodies, in only makes sense. Especially with me working from home. Needless to say, I’m snatching that extra room and setting up a little office for myself. It will be much easier to separate work when I can literally close the door and walk away. Right now, it’s always there. The last thing I see before I go to bed and the first when I wake up. Really looking forward to having some space between work and real life, to say the least.

Boxes... lots of boxes

So, we’re all excited and started packing right away. Literally, the evening we put our deposit on the new place, Deanna started packing. And she hasn’t stopped! Day in, day out for the last 2 weeks. There’s maybe been a day or 2 that she hasn’t done something in the way of preparing to move. But that’s it! She may only be 5′3″, but the girl’s a machine! Me on the other hand, not so much. I’ve lent a hand here and there and packed the majority of my own shit, but I feel like I’ve done nothing in comparison. I guess sitting on your ass for 10-12 hours a day will turn you into a lazy bastard. Who would have thought? :P Best of all, I totally pinched something in my lower back this evening simply standing up. I was laying on the floor, playing with Gaius and when I got about half way up-right, I felt a tight pinch. I didn’t throw it out or anything, but I get this nice little jolt of pain every once in a while when I bend the wrong way… which ever way that is? You’d think I was pushing 50, but sadly I’m only half way there!

T-Minus 11 days, and counting.

Oh man, I hear ya. Having a separate office is pure bliss. Don’t want to work? Awesome, shut the office door. It may not be a house but it sure as hell is going to feel like a castle.

Sweeet! Happy moving dude. Your new place sounds like it’s going to be awesome, specially how it’s not going to hurt the bank that much. It’s essential to have at least one wall between the place you sleep and the place you work. Otherwise, tackling that one last bug at midnight could spell disaster!

I will soon face moving all my stuff 400 miles including a hop over the sea. The thought of moving 300 dvd’s, a few hundred cd’s, my basses + rig, guitars, computer equip and everything else is just too much right now!

@Mike Stickel: That’s what I’m thinking. I know it’s only another apartment and still not a house, but it’s so much more than we have now. I know it’ll be a great move for us.

@Alan: Totally true about having a barrier between work and the place you sleep. Enough times I’ll just keep working while Deanna’s sleeping behind me. Guess because she’s so close, it doesn’t feel like I’m just working all the time. I’m sure that’ll change when I’m in a room on my own.

Whoa, lots of people moving right now! Thanks for the words of encouragement. And best of luck with all of your moves as well.

Good luck with the pending move buddy. Having your own office is definitely sweet. I spent 3 years working out of my bedroom and it was very hard to really ‘walk away’ from work and forget about it.

Since we moved out here to Alberta I now have my own office. I find it so much easier to walk away and forget about work, and as a result, I think my work has gotten a lot better.

Congratz on the new apartment and good luck on fixing your back.

I just moved out from my parents home 6 weeks ago to Denmark and I’ve been living with my uncle and his family since then but tomorrow I’ll be moving to my dormitory room where I will stay for the next 2 years and I’m very excited ^^

Haha Is that why we got that extra bedroom Matt?
I guess we should start looking for a 4 bedroom soon. How about the one who packs the most shit gets the bedroom?

@Pete: Trust me those boxes are not as little as they look.

One thing to be ware of, don’t put all your computers in the same room as the new office. My son has setup camp next to me, and plays games on his PC while I’m trying to work. It usually ends up with me playing his games, and staying up later to finish the project.
