It’s almost a month to the day since I launched my redesign, and I figure it’s about time that I open up in regards to how this all came together, and later, how everything works. My previous design was online for nearly 3 years, and shortly after launch, I wrote a couple articles sharing some of the CSS techniques I had used, along with some WordPress snippets. I’m planning to do that again, but first I’d like to walk through the initial planning stages. From wireframing, through months of design mocks.

It’s been nearly three years since I broke onto the scene with my previous design. And for many reasons, I was in no rush to replace it. But at the same time, I’ve been itching to redesign for quite some time. In fact, if you follow me on Twitter or Flickr, you’ve seen mention and proof of a redesign in progress for what seems like, ever. I’m proud and excited to be releasing my latest effort into the wild, at long last! If you’re reading this in your feed reader, be sure to hit my domain to check it out.

One of the down sides of playing where you work, is when it comes time to play, you hardly feel like it having just worked 8 hours. What I’m referring to of course, is myself being a web designer and having my own personal online projects on the side. My blog also falls into this category as anything put into it is done in my “spare” time. It’s unfortunate that just about anything else I’ve touched has basically sat stagnant since launch with the exception of a few minor updates. In every case, there has…

Wow, it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything new! The dust on my blog almost matches that of my Wii, almost. There’s been a lot going on and I’ve missed several opportunities to talk about current issues that are now ancient history. As I was going through my feed reader this evening, a few articles caught my eye and I thought I would take a moment to touch on some of them. I kind of have an informal standard of single category posts around here, but that’s all going to shit right about now.

A few weeks ago, I finally got around to doing something I’ve been meaning to get to for ages. I created a bare bones stylesheet that I can use as a starting point for new projects. I established a set of common selectors months ago and found myself spending (or rather, wasting) time at the beginning of the CSS phase of every project re-writing virtually the same CSS. It only made sense to create a template for myself to save time, but you know how it is. “Create Bare Bones Stylesheet” sat as an unmarked…

For the past couple years I’ve been flying solo pretty much exclusively. It’s only been recently that I’ve been collaborating with other designers and developers during my freelance journeys and time at Graphics.net. Now that my work is changing hands, I find myself spending a few extra minutes tidying things up before I pass them on. As I discovered pretty quickly, some of the traits that have become second nature to me, aren’t so obvious to others. This is the first in a series of “best practices” articles to follow that will cover some of…

I’m extremely happy to announce the “top secret Xbox related site” I’ve been working on for the past few months is up and running! Dashboard Themes is the first and only site that allows you to preview Xbox 360 dashboard themes as they appear within the dashboard before dropping any coin on them. The current state of the Xbox Live Marketplace doesn’t give you an option to preview content before you pay and Microsoft’s online components for Marketplace content don’t do much better. I came up with an idea to fill this gaping whole, and along with my good friend Andrew McTeer, made it happen.

I almost missed the boat on this latest plague, I mean meme. Sparked by Mr. Jon Hicks, you’ll now find dozens of “design is…” wallpapers popping up on an hourly basis. I have a couple other ideas in mind, so I might post some more. But for now, you can grab this one…

Since January has almost come and gone and the full FeedIcons.com site is yet to be unveiled, I figured I should probably post a bit of an update on the situation.
First off, I’m still floored by the response to this all. I really didn’t expect it to take off as it did, but I’m sure glad it has. I’ve seen the icon being used on websites from around the world in various languages. Some of the more well known web services have picked up on it and even some popular desktop software for both Mac and PC. The icon itself has been downloaded around 20,000 times from the site, which is not bad at all for being online for just over a month.
I had full intentions of taking on the site on my own, but once I started brainstorming I realized that wouldn’t be possible. A few months ago I started up a new business with a couple close friends of mine. Due to our conflicting and ridiculously busy schedules, we’re yet to roll out any projects under the new banner.

Fellow 9ruler Volkher sent me a little heads up this morning that this site looks shockingly similar to mine. Indeed it does - it seems I’ve been ripped!
Surprisingly enough, I wasn’t the least bit angry. I thought for sure if this ever happened, I would be irate. Especially in a case as blatantly obvious as this one. But I wasn’t at all. I was actually laughing as I viewed the source and CSS to find out he hadn’t even bothered to change selector names and all of my comments are still in place. I mean, you know you’re a jerk when you rip someone this bad, but you’re a real lazy jerk when you can’t be bothered to change it up under the hood. The hover link classes are even the same for the main content areas.
The one thing that has got me a little upset though, is that this rip has been featured over at CSS Mania. Now that just sucks. Hopefully this dude has a little decency and will email them to let them know he’s not worthy of being featured. But honestly, I don’t see that happening.
