Sadly I haven't had the chance to play the original Skate more than an hour or two. I really want a 360 now...

I had big hopes for this game after having played the first one quite a bit. The prospect of getting off your board was absolutely fantastic—at least until you actually try it. Like you mentioned in your review, it is APPALLING how bad the controls are. I hated the controls in the old GTA games (Vice City, San Andreas) and this is just hundreds of times worse. Would it really have taken them that much longer to improve the off-board control just a little?

Besides that, I've quite enjoyed the new-ish world, especially the new parks and the dam at the top of the map. I have spent hours dropping into the dam, trying backflips and quad-kickflips, etc.

Overall I think I am with you in your assessment: it's nowhere near perfect but it's still a hell of a lot of fun to play.

I really enjoyed Skate, I had it for the PS3, and as an ex-skater I really enjoyed the game.

I can relate to a lot of your gripes about Skate including the sometimes impossible tasks that require a precision trick and to reach a certain amount of points.

I can't remember the exact mission I was trying to do on Skate, it was fairly near the start where you have to get a big score doing a trick from one part of a sculpture to another. It must have taken me 40 attempts to nail that down :(

Thanks for your comments on the improvements on Skate 2, I think I'm going to get it despite the downsides you mention.

Happy Skating.

It is strange that way, for sure. I think it's because the core gameplay is so good, it's impossible to let the bugs fully get you down on it.

Mine locked up the other day when I went into the replay editor, which totally pissed me off. Not only because I had to get up and manually reboot the console, but I lost a sick line! :P

I went in to Freeskate, removed all the cars and pedestrians and enjoyed myself immensely.

I actually haven't done that this time around. But once I reached a point in the career of Skate, that's what I did from then on. I'm sure it will run much smoother without all the extra bodies taking up valuable resources.

You know, it would almost be worth paying for that cheat code DLC that unlocks everything just to play in freeskate mode with all the locations and gear unlocked.

Regardless off all the "little" annoyances that the game has, Skate 2 has pretty much the best replay value of any game out there right now. Of course, that's my opinion.

Between create-a-spot and the replay editor I probably wont trade this game in until Skate 3 is released.

Also, i agree that some of the challenges can be tough, but if they didn't throw the hard tricks and pedestrians into some of the challenges this game would be much too easy. I find i beat 90% of the challenges on my first go, but the other 10% I need to attempt 15 times over. I suppose they could have aimed to have more mediocre challenges, but in a way it still balances itself out.

I have a write-up of this in my drafts actually. If you read it you'll see a lot of it echoes your thoughts. You know what sums it up perfectly, however? The review you've written is pretty negative, yet you've scored it 4 stars out of 5. That is exactly how I feel about this game. It makes me curse, it freezes my 360, I can't play without feeling frustrated... But I still go back for more.

I loved the first game despite all of the annoyances. I picked up Skate 2 the week it was released.

My first two hours were extremely frustrating because of the dire framerate and the appalling walking controls. I so very nearly gave up completely.

A couple days later, I decided to give it one more chance. I went in to Freeskate, removed all the cars and pedestrians and enjoyed myself immensely.

Since then I have managed to beat the game but only really to get the additional areas. Now I just head out in the city and find a gap I want to kill. Film it and share it.
