I picked up my (first) Xbox 360 back in April and recently passed a huge milestone. In just 7 months I managed to rake in over 10,000 Gamerscore points. I’ve never really been overly competitive or cared about scores and arbitrary numbers that really don’t serve any purpose. But for whatever reason, the Gamerscore comprised of unlocked Achievements, has had me by the balls from day one.
I truly believe the other guys have over looked something huge by not including any sort of global scoring system like the Xbox 360′s Gamerscore. Never have I put so much time and effort into my games as I have with the Xbox 360 and the Gamerscore is fully responsible for this, without a doubt. By including Achievements in games, we are encouraged to do things we may not have accomplished in normal game play or explore different aspects of the games that we may have typically overlooked. For example, I probably wouldn’t have gone back and replayed Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter on hard had it not been for the 25 points I’d receive after each level. And you think I’d really be scouring the war torn landscape in Gears of War for COG tags if they weren’t worth a pile of points? Hell no! Anyway, I could go on forever about the greatness of the Achievement system, as I have once before. But I’ll spare you this time around.
It makes me smile to see 5 digits in my gamercard and I do feel a sense of accomplishment. Even though there isn’t a single thing I can do with my Gamerscore. I think the fact that I haven’t played any of the sports games that are notorious for forking out huge amounts of points with little to no effort has something to do with it. Although, having King Kong on my list does make me feel a little dirty. But to be honest, I had already played it on PC and wanted to give it another run through. Since I had retired from PC gaming entirely, there wasn’t really another way to go. I believe there wasn’t much being released at the time either. Justified!
Anyway, I’m on the road to 15,000 now. I see a couple others on my friends list getting close to 10,000 but no one over 9,000 just yet. Anyone else feeling satisfied with their accomplishments?
