Podcasts – I’ve Seen The Light

If you don’t know what Podcasts are, you must have been living under a rock for the past few months. It’s all the rage! All the cool kids are doing it – which is part of the reason I’ve kept my distance. I’m not a fan of the hype machine. But I must admit, Podcasting has actually lived up to it’s reputation.

I’ve been working at home for about a month and a half now. It’s amazing how quickly you grow tired of the same music day in, day out. Even if you have over 700 albums. I didn’t think I would see the day, but it came just last week. I made a few attempts at some internet radio stations – Punk Radio Cast is about the only one I can tolerate for an extended period. But even that gets tired after a few hours. So I decided to give in and actually check out this thing they call ‘Podcasting’ – which I might add, makes me nuts. What’s one of the first thing you’ll see in an FAQ on any given podcast site? “Do I need an iPod to listen?” Worst name ever. Imagine watching TV was called RCAing – come on now! Couldn’t they have come up with a more generic name that didn’t cater to a specific brand? Brand loyalty is a powerful thing. Anyway, I’m getting sidetracked…

I figured the best place to start would be Odeo. I’ve heard lots about it since Dan Cederholm is the one responsible for it’s pretty front-end. Within the first couple minutes I had a few podcasts in my queue and felt somewhat like a kid in a candy store. So much great content – for free! Shows ranging from 10 minutes to a full hour and covering every topic imaginable. I spent most of today listening to podcasts and just when I was about to run out, I check my Odeo Syncr and had 3 new files already downloaded, ready for me to listen. That there, is some good stuff!

Now I’ve got an endless reservoir of original content to keep me entertained while I go through my days.
