This game is almost perfect to me...

- animations (mc's, water, plants)

- the glossy graphics (slippery rocks, plastified jungle leafs, etc., )

- the pace that picks up gradually as you uncover secrets

- the well orchestrated music that really sets the mood throughout the adventure

- True DTS 5.1 sound effects

but... I'm still wishing for a game of that caliber to succeed without the obligatory "blood and violence"... so I can introduce my daughter to gaming...

guess i'm dreaming!

This looks like the best game out on the Playstation 3 so far. Despite not owning a PS3, this is one of the very few games I've been keeping my eye. Hopefully I'll get to play it one day. Glad you enjoyed it!

@Chris: It's only really like Tomb Raider in that Drake is a tomb raider and the environments are similar. The combat system is comparable to Gears of War - having to take cover behind things, pop-up and shoot when enemies are reloading or blind-fire when you're getting rushed. I've actually come to expect this sort of gameplay from shooters now, as running and gun is just plain stupid. ;)

@Daniel: If you're on the fence, give it a rent. You might be able to finish it before it's time to take it back. Took me about 8 and a half hours the first time, though.

@Lorne: The jetski parts are great fun, aren't they? At first, I didn't realize I could control Elena as well, and died a few times trying to make it through without shooting. I also really enjoyed the jeep chase chapter. The falling trees were great!

Are you playing it on a harder difficulty for your second play-though? I'm on hard now and noticing that the only difference is that you can take less damage before dying. Which is great! I was afraid they would make the baddies harder to take down, which would have been insane.

As for UT3, I would recommend it only if...

you've played and loved the previous PC UT games

you've played and hated the console UT games

you know how old school PC FPS "work" and that sort of gameplay

you can play it without comparing to Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4 MP

I picked up this game a week ago and I still can't believe how gorgeous it is. One point in particualar that impressed me was Drake and Elena going upriver on the jetski.

The hand to hand combat is also pretty sweet. The animations are context sensitive too; with an enemy being near a wall and Drake pushing them up against it and smacking the shit out of 'em.

I'm on my second playthrough and even though the game has a slightly linear nature, it still feels fresh. The fact that there is only one loading sequence at the beginning urged me to play just "one more level" because it's that seamless.

Now I'm looking for another PS3 game to play...

... should I take the Unreal plunge? :)

I have this one on my list to buy but I'm not sure if I should. I might wait until a Platnium range comes out.

I've never been a huge fan of Tomb Raider so I didn't think I'd like this all that much. It did take some getting used too. Especially having to take cover behind everything. I was dieing endlessly attempting to run out and shoot everything. But you soon realise those rocks and random objects are there for a reason. Don't think I'll buy this one though, maybe rent it.
