10,000
Sunday, November 19th, 2006
I picked up my (first) Xbox 360 back in April and recently passed a huge milestone. In just 7 months I managed to rake in over 10,000 Gamerscore points. I’ve never really been overly competitive or cared about scores and arbitrary numbers that really don’t serve any purpose. But for whatever reason, the Gamerscore comprised of unlocked Achievements, has had me by the balls from day one.

I truly believe the other guys have over looked something huge by not including any sort of global scoring system like the Xbox 360’s Gamerscore. Never have I put so much time and effort into my games as I have with the Xbox 360 and the Gamerscore is fully responsible for this, without a doubt. By including Achievements in games, we are encouraged to do things we may not have accomplished in normal game play or explore different aspects of the games that we may have typically overlooked. For example, I probably wouldn’t have gone back and replayed Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter on hard had it not been for the 25 points I’d receive after each level. And you think I’d really be scouring the war torn landscape in Gears of War for COG tags if they weren’t worth a pile of points? Hell no! Anyway, I could go on forever about the greatness of the Achievement system, as I have once before. But I’ll spare you this time around.
It makes me smile to see 5 digits in my gamercard and I do feel a sense of accomplishment. Even though there isn’t a single thing I can do with my Gamerscore. I think the fact that I haven’t played any of the sports games that are notorious for forking out huge amounts of points with little to no effort has something to do with it. Although, having King Kong on my list does make me feel a little dirty. But to be honest, I had already played it on PC and wanted to give it another run through. Since I had retired from PC gaming entirely, there wasn’t really another way to go. I believe there wasn’t much being released at the time either. Justified!
Anyway, I’m on the road to 15,000 now. I see a couple others on my friends list getting close to 10,000 but no one over 9,000 just yet. Anyone else feeling satisfied with their accomplishments?

I pulled past the 8,000 mark the other night, the satisfaction was immense, my problem is that there are 4 games I played not long after getting ma 360 - back in that time when gamerscore wasn’t important to me - that I only played a small portion of, like CoD2 I have completed the war and thats it, but I traded it in so can’t finish it.
Tempted to signup to a online game rental site and get those games rented for a few weeks and just get as much as I can out of them.

I was thinking this recently too.
I’ve always been a gamer but now with the 360 achievements I’m way more dedicated about beating games.

I just hit 2,000 today after getting my 360 in September. It’s not a ton but it makes me happy.

Hey Matt, I been checkin out your site for some time and love your work. It caught my eye when you said that you “retired from PC gaming entirely” and was wondering if its because of the high cost of keepin the pc updated or was there somthin I missed in you past forums that turned you off from pc? Since I also gave up on it because of the dang dual sli prices I’m now changin over to the 360….just wondering if you miss pc gaming experience at all?
Take care man and keep doin what makes you happy!

Congrats!!!
I’m still somewhere with my 3000 points
And I bought the XBOX 360 on day 1… But I am a louzy gamer. I just have to love a game to finish it.
But you are right. Those achievements make you play the game in a different way.
I am a huge Halo-Fan, but I never searched for thos skulls in Halo2. If there were any achievements for those, I would have found all of them

This is why I loved splinter cell chaos theory, the rating you got at the ended always pushed you to try harder next time and get it to 100% (which I did). I have no idea why they took this out in double agent.

@Stewart: Ah, COD2 is a perfect example of the greatness of Achievements. While they could have gone a bit broader with the offerings (IE. there’s no online Achievements to be had), I can’t say I would have played COD2 on Hard if it wasn’t for the points.
@Tboss: I wrote about my departure from PC gaming here. I definitely don’t have any regrets at all and to be honest, there’s only been one game since March (I thought it was April when I picked up my 360, but it was March) that’s been PC only that I wish I was able to play, and that’s Company of Heroes.
The only experience that I tie to PC gaming is the constant aggravation you’re forced to endure time and time again. And no, I don’t miss that at all.
@Chris: Awesome! You’ll get enough points from those 3.
@Luke: I assume you’re talking about the Xbox version? The 360 version still had your stealth score with full break down after each mission.

First off congrats on the Gamerscore thats pretty impressive.
I have to totally agree with you on how influential the Gamerscore and achievements can be. I was happy to see this kind of idea in Battlefield on PC.
Unfortunately this also influenced a lot of cheating because some people just had to be on the top of the Leaderboard. All in all I think it´s great and I am really excited about the way things are changing in gaming console and PC. I think we are gonna be seeing some really cool stuff in the near future on the 360 also with the camera now and everything .

My GamerScore has me totally hooked too. I’ve raked in 140 in a week, but man do I want more. It’s like an addiction; I find myself doing whatever possible to increase my points.
Admitably my brother’s been helping me up that score.

Congrats on the 10k. I’m still looking to break the 1k mark, but I should get it soon.
Did you see the guy with 100k (link)?
I’m not sure if I should be impressed or sad for that guy.
